They have a business unit that provides commissioning, engineering, support programming, and operational services for mission-critical and other complex facilities. Their credentialed team of professionals (engineers, compliance specialists, program managers, energy managers, and operational experts) focuses on delivering compliant projects that exceed client expectations. 

The firm’s outstanding team creates solutions for complex building processes. Client sectors include pharmaceutical manufacturing, GMP manufacturing, data centers, healthcare, life sciences, as well as government and bio-containment facilities. They also offer a software solution used to support building commissioning, quality assurance, and O&M. 

About this role

Our client is seeking a Business Unit Director responsible for the leadership, growth, and financial performance of the business unit that provides consulting, commissioning, and engineering services. The Director will oversee operations, organic growth initiatives, business development, talent management, accounting, and finance for the business unit. This person will work closely with the Managing Director and the corporate team to set annual performance goals and determine the resources required to achieve those goals. The Business Unit Director will provide monthly financial and operational updates to the Managing Director. 

Strategic Responsibility

Financial 

  • Generate organic earnings growth of 15% CAGR. 
  • Lead the integration of acquisitions that will add 30% to the business over the next few years.
  • Expand business unit contribution margin from 25% to 30%.
  • Establish success metrics and allocate resources to optimize performance and growth.
  • Collaborate with the Managing Director and Human Resources on the business unit's development, modification, and evolution of compensation plans (including bonus plans).  

Operations and Execution 

  • Drive performance to achieve mutually defined KPIs across the business unit (e.g., utilization, billable hours, etc.).  
  • Ensure high-quality work product and client satisfaction as measured through annual client satisfaction surveys and client retention metrics. 
  • Limit staff attrition to 12% annually and improve quantitative employee satisfaction scores.  
  • Work with HR to develop career mapping and development programs for the business. 
  • Ensure "A" players in key roles; actively develop, redeploy, or remove underperformers.
  • Motivate, collaborate, and coordinate between other business units and support functions. 

Strategy 

  • Collaborate with the Managing Director and the Head of Business Development to identify target geographies and business lines for office and business expansion. 
  • Develop a 5-year plan for business expansion with specific new office targets by year, revenue growth projections, and market penetration goals. 
  • Work with HR to staff new offices with a mix of internal and external talent acquisition.
  • Assist in canvasing markets to identify and prioritize accretive M&A opportunities across geographies and business lines to enhance the corporate growth strategy.  

Business Development 

  • Envision, plan, and execute net revenue goals and plans in conjunction with staff. 
  • Achieve growth objectives utilizing the corporate marketing team to develop tactics specific to the business unit. 
  • Identify and coordinate cross-selling opportunities between the other business units.
  • Execute business development efforts to achieve mutually defined backlog and growth targets.
  • Provide hands-on leadership in business development activities, pursuits, and proposals.
  • Lead key or large client acquisition strategies.
  • Orchestrate responses to significant RFPs to optimize the win rate.  

  Managerial 

  • Manage three (or more) direct operational reports who each oversee 10-50 employees and manage business unit support professionals.  
  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and review of KPIs for the business unit.  
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  
Preferred Experience
  • 15 years of progressive experience leading in commercial building, engineering, or related industries. Operations, Profit & Loss, Organic Growth Initiatives, Business Development, Project-level Accounting, and Talent Management.
  • Experience partnering with corporate development teams to identify potential acquisition targets.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related science required, MBA preferred.
