About this role

In this newly created position, the Managing Director (MD) will be responsible for value creation, identifying synergies, formulating a go-to-market combined strategy, and selecting the leaders for this expanding division. The goal is to double or triple the business by the end of 2026 ($40M to $100M). The leader we need will incorporate newly acquired businesses and expand the existing businesses by 20% per year. Our client has an extraordinary track record of well above average margins and profits and will be looking for leaders who are comfortable working with high expectations. Our client believes rigorous management focusing on high-value niche businesses, minimizing the reliance on subcontractors, and leveraging unique expertise for high-value services is critical to success in a high-margin business. It is anticipated that approximately one-third of the business's growth will be organic and two-thirds acquisitive.

The MD will be responsible for the leadership, growth, and financial performance of the division that provides consulting and engineering services to the built environment. Services include acoustic engineering, commissioning, facility operations, maintenance, and other high-value consulting services. We see a person who will oversee operations, strategy, growth initiatives, acquisition value creation and integration, business capture, team building, accounting, and finance. This leader will be a part of the corporate leadership team and participate in helping to set corporate performance goals and resource allocation.

We seek a value-creator with significant management experience (current team size of 150 people with three or more direct reports) who will lead with integrity and authenticity. A person who will earn the respect of the organization through their actions, clarity, and commitment to success is needed. The right leader must be comfortable with ambiguity and establish priorities focusing on critical growth factors. This person will be a mentor, a culture developer, and a team builder. They will be responsible for recruiting and developing the right people and be willing to roll up their sleeves to see that the business stays on track.

Strategic Responsibility

Financial

  • Double or triple the business size from $40M to $100M by the end of 2026.
  • Achieve high single-digit or better organic CAGR.
  • Successfully execute and integrate 1-2 M&A deals a year.
  • Build and maintain a best-in-class contribution margin profile above 25%. 

Operations and Execution 

  • Drive performance to achieve mutually defined KPIs across the business unit (e.g., utilization, billable hours, etc.) and highlight areas where targeted improvement may be required.
  • Conduct annual SWOT assessments and develop plans to address deficiencies and build resilience.
  • Assist in developing an M&A playbook for the building business.
  • Integrate the acquired businesses ensuring maximum value creation from the unified platform.

Strategy

  • Collaborate with Head of BD and BU Directors to target geographic and service line expansion.
  • Develop a 5-year expansion plan to include annual revenue and market penetration targets.
  • Work with Business Units and HR, ensuring expansion is supported by existing and new staff hires.
  • Partner with corporate development on driving a strategic, systematic approach to acquiring and integrating new businesses.
  • Canvas the market with Business Unit Directors and outside resources to identify and prioritize accretive M&A opportunities and new geographies that align with the growth strategy.
  • Partner with corporate development on the highest priority targets, serving a key role in selling the target owner and talent on their strategy and vision.

Business Development

  • Envision, plan, and execute net revenue goals and plans with staff.
  • Achieve growth objectives utilizing the corporate marketing team to develop tactics.
  • Take ownership over business development activities, including trade shows, professional organizations, and educational offerings.
  • Identify and coordinate cross-selling opportunities between business units.
  • Execute business development efforts to achieve mutually defined backlog and growth targets.
  • Lead key or large client acquisition strategies.
  • Orchestrate responses to significant RFPs to optimize the win rate. 
Preferred Experience
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience leading operations, profit & loss, strategy, organic growth initiatives, acquisition integration, business development, and accounting and finance in commercial construction or related industry.
  • Experience partnering with M&A teams to identify potential acquisition targets.
  • Successful track record of improving operational efficiency and driving profitable growth.
  • Proven ability to win business in a competitive environment.
